Families for Independent Living (FFIL)

FFIL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that works to address the needs for affordable housing where the special needs of people with developmental disabilities (DD) can be met. Tualatin Valley Housing Partners (TVHP) working in partnership with FFIL opened The Bridge in May 2005, offering 14 adults with DD the opportunity to experience greater independence in their own apartments. The complex offers a friendly supportive atmosphere, a community room where residents can socialize and enjoy activities, and close proximity to public transportation, shopping, and services.

A second partnership between FFIL and TVHP resulted in the opening of Merlo Station in June 2008. Merlo Station is a high-density (128 units), low-income apartment complex located near the Tri Met MAX Merlo Station near Costco in Beaverton. Included are ten 1-bedroom apartments and 5 2-bedroom apartments that provide independent living for adults with DD. Five additional 2-bedroom apartments house adults with DD who need a little more support. These residents have a roommate and the support of an on-site Resident Assistant to help them achieve their goal to live independently.
